Learn, Play, Grow

Making learning joyful in Anganwadis with material from Sesame Workshop India.

The Need

It takes skill to motivate young children to learn. The presence of a skilled teacher also encourages parents to send their young ones to school.  The Anganwadi Worker, who delivers a range of services, including nutrition, often needs support with training and the use of age-appropriate material to make early learning engaging and effective.

The Intervention

The ‘Learn.Play.Grow’ inititative aimed at developing the capacity of the Anganwadi Worker to prepare children for school by using play-based Galli Galli Sim Sim (GGSS) early literacy materials. The project focused specifically on developing emergent literacy skills. It helped preschool children develop vocabulary, phonological awareness, letter knowledge, narrative skills, print motivation and print awareness.

Where Fun Meets Learning

Sadhna Kumari, an Anganwadi educator shares, “The GGSS materials have been very helpful in teaching children about personal hygiene like washing hands, brushing teeth, wearing slippers, covering food and drinking water, etc. The attendance at the AWC has also increased. Thanks to the initiative, while earlier there used to be only 10-12 children coming to the center every day, now 18-20 children attend sessions at the centre every day. Kids are excited about learning from the GGSS materials and are even going home and talking about healthy habit to their families.”

3792 AWCs in Shahjahanpur, Farukkhabad and Kannauj districts of Uttar Pradesh.

The project reached approximately 70,000 children.

Children exposed to GGSS in Anganwadis improved by 10% average on the school readiness indicators compared to children not receiving the intervention.

We’d love to keep you posted about all the exciting things that happen at the Workshop.
